Book Review “Educated A Memoir” by Tara Westover

I started this book from the summer of 2019, and finally I finished it!!
This is my first non-fiction book I read which is written in English.
I heard many good things about this book from world's bookgramers, so I knew I had to give this a try and I'm so glad I did it!!
And then, I couldn't wait to share it with you because it was so incredible and shocking.

"Educated" is a true story, written by Tara Westover who shares her memoirs of growing up in a survivalist Mormon family on a secluded mountain in Idaho.
Her family was so isolated from mainstream society.
Her father might have bipolar disorder.
He never believed government, medical industry and public school, because he believed that those people are trying to brainwash and kill him.
So Tara didn't have a birth certificate, and she had never been to school until 17 years old.
Her family spent their time preparing for the end of the world.
Tara worked with her father and brothers to scrap in the junkyard.
When they were badly injured and burned, her father wouldn't let them go to hospital but took her mother's treatment and her own recipe of essential oils.

As Tara gets older, she gradually sensed distrust of her family, especially her father.
When the older brother does the unthinkable and goes to college, Tara was exposed to the possibility of a different kind of life.
As a self-taught learner, she took the ACT and got acceptance in to college.

In the class room, she felt like she was the only dancer on the stage who seemed to have missed rehearsal.  Because she learned about historical event like, "Holocaust" and "the Civil Rights Movement" for the first time.
She eventually went on to  Cambridge and Harvard to earn a PhD.

As I read this book, I feel about the idea of family, the concept of home, the way one's upbringing affects one's life, and the difference between "education" and "brainwash".

Again, this is true story and is not the old story, too.
Tara's family has not change and they still live on that mountain, so real I could even go visit...

Definitely worth a read.

 この本を読み始めたのは2019年の夏、それから年が明け、ようやく読み終えました！
この本は私にとって初めてのノンフィクション洋書です。
きっかけはインスタで色んな国のBookstagramerがマイベスト10に入れて話題にしていたので、洋書だけど挑戦したいと思い、読了しました( ´∀｀ )
とにかく今の日常では考えられない現実離れしたショッキングな内容でした。

『Educated』は著者であるタラ自身の半生を綴った実話の回顧録です。
タラはモルモン教信者でありサバイバリスト主義の家族とともに、アイダホにある社会から隔絶された山に住んでいました。
タラの父親は、政府や病院や学校は自分たちを洗脳して殺そうとしている恐ろしい機関だと信じており、タラ自身も自宅で生まれたため出生証明書も無く、17歳になるまで学校に行くことを許されませんでした。
恐らくこの父親は双極性障害であろうとタラも推測しています。
なにしろ病院に行かない父親なので正式な診断がないため、推測でしかありませんが。

サバイバリスト主義のタラの家族は日々「世界の終わり」にむけて武器や食料を準備して過ごしていました。
幼いタラは学校に行かず、父親と兄弟たちと一緒に鉄くずなど集めるため危険なスクラップのたまり場で仕事をしていました。
家族の誰かが脳が見えるほどの酷いケガや重度の火傷をしたときも病院には連れて行かず、チンキやエッセンシャルオイルを使って母親が手当てをするだけでした。

タラは成長するにつれ、家族（特に父親）への不信感が強くなってきます。
大学へ進んだ兄の影響を受けてタラは大学入学資格をとるため独学で勉強を始めました。
見事入学を果たし、教室で他の学生と机を並べる中で、タラは自分がいかに世間知らずだということを思い知らされていきます。
逆境を乗り越え、最終的にタラはケンブリッジやハーバード大学で博士号をとるまでになりました。

家族とは何か、家とは何か、親の価値観やしつけが子供に与える影響がどんなものなのか、「教育」と「洗脳」の違いを考えさせられました。

再度申し上げますが、これは実話であり、古い話ではありません。
タラは1986年生まれで私より若く、彼女の家族は今でもアイダホの山に住んでおり、その気になれば会いに行けるのです。

洋書を読む機会があれば、ぜひともこの本を読んで見ることをお薦めします。
